Mike Turpin, Club Director - Wild Carp Club of Virginias

Hello, my name is Michael (Mike) Turpin. I have lived in Virginia my whole life.

I was introduced to the outdoors at a very young age, camping and fishing almost every weekend with my family.

I started carp fishing in 2000 when a friend told me about a carp paylake. After he told me that we would catch big fish and have a chance to win money, I was hooked!

After a few years of paylaking and learning the baits and gear, I started researching the internet for more ideas and information on carp fishing. I ran across The Carp Anglers Group.

I learned that they had been fishing the lake I had been on for years and was holding a "fish in" there again. I made the trip and looked at the gear and talked to a few fishers.

I was shown how to tie a hair rig, the pods, alarms, Baitrunner reels and how all this worked together. You guessed it....I was really hooked!!

I am a former Virginia state chairman of CAG. I promote catch and release carp fishing and fish safety. In 2011 and 2012, I hosted a "Take A Kid Carpin'" day.

I feel there is nothing like watching a kid reel in a big fish—especially when it is most likely bigger than any fish even their parents have caught!

I hope with the help of the Wild Carp Clubs creating awareness that someday carp will be listed as a sport fish.
